We participated in The Murph Challenge again as a gym this Memorial Day Weekend on Monday May 29th. This workout consists of a 1 mile run. 100 pull-ups. 200 push-ups. 300 squats. Another 1 mile run. All with a 20-lb weighted vest.
For those not familiar with the infamous workout, it is the Official annual fundraiser of the LT. Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation, set up by Lt. Michael Murphy’s family after his death. (You can learn more about why Lt. Murphy was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor here.)
This event was open to members and the public, with a scaled option for lighter weight or no vest. We had a great turnout, but even more special was the attitude of everyone cheering each other on and doubling back to complete portions of the workout with fellow participants.
This particular Murph Challenge was a special one, as we were grateful to have a teammate of Lt. Murphy come and introduce the event, and reflect on his time knowing and working alongside Michael.
As a gym community, we were proud to do our small part to honor Lt. Michael Murphy & all those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for this great country, and to remember what Memorial Day is all about. We raised close to $100 through cash donations to benefit the LT Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation.
Virginia Beach is a uniquely patriotic city. Thousands of military professionals and their families have called this place home over the years. With our gym facility’s location adjacent to NAS Oceana, we hear the deafening noise of the F/A-18 Super Hornets taking off multiple times a day. It would be impossible to live in Virginia Beach and not feel the presence of the military. And we’re damn proud of that fact. The roots of our gym are deeply intertwined with the military, with many of our members being active duty military themselves, or military wives or husbands. The heroism, bravery and sacrifice of those who serve is something we do not take lightly.
As a way to say thank you to those who bravely serve their country and their community, American Sled Dogs is happy to always offer a discounted membership rate for military and first responders. We understand that orders change, and deployments and training schedules aren’t always predictable, so we have a flexible and fair policy about freezing memberships and we don’t do contracts or sign-up fees.
