I hear it all the time; “I do crossfit, I cycle, I run, I lift weights – fill in the blank….. so why do I need Yoga?” As a body builder, powerlifter and overall fitness junkie, I will testify that yoga is a game changer to enhance mental and physical performance. Yoga enhanced my awareness, mental focus, improved my physical abilities as directly correlated to new Prs and muscle definition as seen in my posing and routines.
Yoga is a great expression of human movement, a connection of mind and body. Yoga is a perfect performance complement regardless of discipline, gender, age or ability. Your athletic performance results are a reflection of the body you bring to the training program. A body out of balance cannot develop or perform to its full potential.
Athletes require physical competence in 10 areas:
- cardiovascular and respiratory endurance
Yoga provides the mental and physical complement to enhance performance in all of these areas. Yoga makes you “feel” and brings awareness to areas that need improvement. Yoga forces you to slow down and pay attention to your body. Yoga cues are geared to correct your biomechanics while affording you the opportunity to create muscular tensile strength, endurance and flexibility. Yoga helps to restore and correct muscle and joint imbalances resulting from poor posture and poor motor patterns.
Best of all, Yoga is fun. Yoga presents new challenges and with it new accomplishments – I love to squat, deadlift, bench press… and I love to do inversions and crazy balances….. Give it a chance. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain in enhancing your personal and professional growth.
